Why Your Picking Hand Is Holding You Back

One of the techniques I have my students do is pretty simple, yet not always intuitive – working each hand on its own.

I usually have students start by practicing with the fretting hand only, which is pretty easy to do.

Then, they switch to the picking hand.

Not so easy.

A lot of them can’t remember what strings to play and/or how many times to play each string.

The reason for this is simple – we usually watch our fretting hand and pay little to no attention to the picking hand.

This is one of the things that holds people back in their playing. It held me back for a long time.

Matter of fact, nowadays I begin each practice session by isolating my picking hand and working on it by itself. It never ceases to amaze me how much it helps my playing.
