I started doing this and it changed everything

The vast majority of guitar players watch their fretting hand when they play. That makes sense, because we often need to see where we’re placing our fingers on the fretboard.

But how often do you watch your picking hand?

My guess is: not very often.

And that means most of you probably need to spend some time working on your picking hand. Some of you may need to spend a lot of time on it.

Here’s something you can try today:

Pick something you know well enough to play while watching your picking hand. Play it as you naturally would, but pay close attention to the motion of your pick.

Ask yourself: Are you making wide motions? Moving inefficiently? Making unnecessary movements?

Start over, and this time focus 100% on making every pick motion as small and efficient as possible.

Repeat this for 3–5 minutes every day.

Do this consistently and it will make a huge difference in your playing.
