The Insanity Factor

Einstein allegedly once said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

In other words, it’s foolish to do the same thing over and over again if it isn’t working.

In truth, there doesn’t seem to be any evidence that Einstein actually said that, but there is truth to the statement. It’s painful to watch sometimes.

I see my students making the same mistakes and (at times) not heeding my advice to slow down, simplify, focus on accuracy, and forget about speed.

So here’s my challenge for you today. Take something you’re working on and examine how you practice. Is it working? Are you making progress? Are you getting faster, more accurate, more consistent, or do you still fumble sometimes?

If you don’t see yourself making significant improvement after a week or two of practicing the same thing, you probably need to consider the insanity factor.

Are you repeating the same practice routine and not getting anywhere? Time to examine it, change it, and measure it.

If you don’t, you’ll just keep spinning your wheels.
